The UMBC Department of Music wishes to thank UMBC faculty and staff for their extraordinary commitment to the university and usher in Thanksgiving with a free “rush hour” concert in the stellar Earl and Darielle Linehan Concert Hall.
Spanning two centuries of piano trios by women composers, this concert, performed by pianist Sookkyung Cho, cellist Si-Yan Darren Li, and UMBC Professor of Violin Airi Yoshioka, recognizes the 150th birthday of the first prominent American female composer Amy Beach (b. 1867, New Hampshire).
The program will include the Piano Trio, Op. 150 by Beach; the Piano Trio, Op. 17 by Clara Schumann (b. 1819, Germany); and the world premiere of a new composition, Rivers, Shallow and Deep for piano trio, by UMBC Professor of Music Anna Rubin.
Rubin says of her piece, “Rivers, Shallow and Deep for violin, cello and piano is a meditation on water, on its beauty and seductive power, its danger and changeable qualities. While scientists can analyze it down to the molecular level, it still has a magical, even divine quality that never ceases to amaze.”
