The UMBC Symphony Orchestra performs orchestral literature from the 18th to the 21st centuries including both standard repertoire and contemporary works, from a broad range of musical styles. Rehearsals and concerts are held in the beautiful Linehan Concert Hall of the Performing Arts and Humanities Building. Membership is open to all UMBC students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the local community by audition, with preference given to qualified UMBC students. Please contact Orchestra Director, Philip Mann, for more information and to schedule an audition.
When does the Symphony Orchestra meet?
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:10-8:45 in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building.
Who should audition for the Symphony Orchestra?
All members of the UMBC community are welcome and encouraged to audition for the Symphony Orchestra, including undergraduate and graduate students from all majors, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the local community. Preference will be given to qualified currently enrolled students.
To audition, you should prepare 1–2 minutes of music of something you know well that you feel represents your abilities on the instrument; choose something you feel good about. Also, please be prepared to play two scales of your choice that demonstrate your sound, technique, and range on the instrument.
