Ensemble Information
A course designed for 8-15 advanced vocalists, Opera Workshop offers students the opportunity to study stage acting, movement, and character development within the sphere of musical performance. The fall semester typically involves students perfecting shorter scenes, while in the spring semester a performance of a short opera or comparable project is planned. NOTE: Opera Workshop will not be meeting in Fall 2026. The ensemble will resume in Spring 2027.
When does Opera Workshop rehearse?
Tuesday and Thursday, 4:00-5:15 in the Linehan Concert Hall
Who should audition for Opera Workshop?
All vocal performance majors and any student (music major or non-major) who has strong vocal and music reading skills, stage experience, and a creative imagination. It is expected that any singer cast in Workshop performances would be concurrently enrolled in voice lessons. Opera Workshop is an auditioned cast in the Spring; individual meeting times with the conductor are brief and informal.
Will singing in Opera Workshop satisfy my Arts and Humanities General Education Program (GEP) requirements?
Yes, if for one semester you register concurrently for MUSC358 Music in Performance, a one-hour, once-a-week lecture course that introduces students to important topics in music performance and criticism.
