The Music Minor is a great option for students who want to continue developing their musical interests while pursuing a major in another field. The minor requires 18 credits in MUSC courses. For a full list of requirements, please consult the Academic Catalog.
Declaring the Music Minor
A departmental audition is not required to declare the music minor. Students may add the minor by completing the Declaration/Change of Major, Minor, and Certificate Form and submitting it to the Registrar’s Office (see bullet point #3 on the form). Advising appointments are not required for music minors. However, students with questions about the program are welcome to contact Dr. Joseph Siu (jsiu@umbc.edu).
Private Lessons (MUSC 190)
Students interested in MUSC 190 Private Lessons for Non-Music Majors should first contact a potential instructor for their instrument. A list of instructors and their contact information is available HERE.
When contacting an instructor, please include:
- Your Campus ID
- Your previous experience with the instrument
- Whether you plan to enroll in weekly one-hour lessons (3 credits) or weekly 40-minutes lessons (2 credits)
Please note that most instructors only offer 3-credit (one-hour) lessons. Once an instructor confirms their availability to teach you for the upcoming semester, they will grant you permission to enroll. When registering for MUSC 190, please make sure to enter the correct number of credits (2 or 3) in the UNITS column.
Ensembles
Students interested in joining a music ensemble should contact the ensemble director for audition information and permission to enroll.
