Samuel Winnie ('16 Music) named Finalist in American Prize

Samuel Winnie (Music Composition '16) has been named a finalist for the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award in Composition for his piece Nightfall in Lothlorien, performed by the UMBC Wind Ensemble conducted by faculty member Brian Kaufman and recorded by director of recording Alan Wonneberger.  To hear a recording of the work, click here.     

Samuel Winnie is a Baltimore-based composer originally from Joppa, MD, who received his BA in Music Composition in the spring of 2016. As an undergraduate, Sam studied music under UMBC’s composition faculty: Dr. Anna Rubin and Dr. Linda Dusman. Throughout his tenure as a Linehan Artist Scholar, Sam collaborated with UMBC's finest artists in many multimedia works, such as the award winning documentary "Future Children", by Emily Eaglin. In the spring of 2015, Sam studied abroad in Piacenza, Italy, where he studied music composition under Carlo Landini for six months. In 2016, Sam was invited to the University of Oklahoma where one of his works for solo cello and electronics, Romani Lachrymose, was selected as a part of a nation-wide competition for a performance at the 2016 National Student Electronic Music Event (N_SEME). Following his graduation, Sam hopes to attend graduate school in the Netherlands where he has been accepted into the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht.

Karena Ingram Named Director of Composition at Symphony No.1

Karena Ingram ('16 Music) has been selected as the new Director of Composition with Symphony No. 1, a Baltimore based chamber orchestra.  She will prepare customized compositions and arrangements for the orchestra, coordinate with guest composers, and coordinate their fourth annual call for scores next summer.  Congrats to Karena on this fantastic job opportunity!

Karena Ingram ('16 Music) Wins Award in Call for Scores!

Congrats to Karena Ingram ('16 Music) on winning the Maryland Award for her orchestral composition, Animals of the Solstice; Calm of the Equinox, in Symphony Number One's Call for Scores! Karena was among 30 nominees for their third annual call for scores and was given this award alongside 8 recipients of other prizes.  Congrats to Karena on this fantastic award and we look forward to seeing more accomplishments from what is shaping into a blossoming career.

Works by Certificate Program Alum Reviewed in Boston Globe

Review of a CD Featuring Mischa Salkind-Pearl's Composition

A CD featuring compositions by Mischa Salkind-Pearl, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in American Contemporary Music Alum, was recently reviewed in the Boston Globe.  The Ludovico Ensemble, a Boston based ensemble, recorded his works on their newest CD Mischa Salkind-Pearl: I Might Be Wrong.

Work by Karena Ingram '16, Music Composition, Featured on CD

Chapter Zero, a work by Karena Ingram '16, Music Composition alumna, was selected to be featured on a solo CD project by Dr. Iwona Glinka   

Dr. Iwona Glinka is a Polish flautist and soloist in new and experimental music. She is the founder of the Phasma-Music Ensemble, and has toured as a featured performer and ensemble member throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. After responding to her competition for one-minute solo flute pieces, Glinka was kind enough to select my work, Chapter Zero, as a winner. She will be recording the pieces she has selected in a solo album and performing them in the fall. Chapter Zero is inspired by the artwork of Irene Chan called Chapter Zero. This installment features a plastic flower floating in water, etched with the words “existence,” “non-existence,” “both,” and ”neither.” The piece depicts the minimal quality of the artwork while capturing the textures and essence of water and words.

Joey Mitchell, '09 Music Alum, to Tour NY with Swampcandy

Joey Mitchell (Music '09) is set to tour New York State with his band, Swampcandy in February.  Natively based in Annapolis, Swampcandy is a duo with Mitchell playing bass and kick drum and his musical partner Ruben Dobbs on lead vocals, mandolin, and guitar.  Their musical style is heavily influenced by primitive blues and they have toured all over the US and the UK.  

Their accolades as a band include 250+ shows in one year, winning the 2014 Floydfest 'On The Rise' competition, their latest album, Midnight Creep/Noonday Stomp, being ranked in the NBT Music Radio's Top 150, and receiving Radio Flag's Radio Star Award for Best Artist in Fall 2014. 

Congratulations to Swampcandy and their success, we look forward to hearing more about their prosperous career!
