Laura Ruas, Double Bass, is one of the region’s most sought after double bassists as a teacher, chamber and orchestral musician. Principal Bass of both the Baltimore Chamber and Concert Artists of Baltimore orchestras, she has performed with the National and Baltimore Symphony orchestras and was a member of the former Baltimore Opera Orchestra. She has worked with conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, Neemi Jarvi, Leonard Bernstein, Christof Eschenbach, Zubin Mehta, and Marin Alsop, who in 2005 invited Laura to join the Cabrillo Music Festival. Her tours include South America, France, China, Japan and Hong Kong. She teaches Double Bass at UMBC, Goucher College, and Double Bass and Theory at the Baltimore School for the Arts high school. Laura is dedicated to music education in the schools and teaches in the Baltimore School for the Arts TWIGS program, which provides free music lessons and classes for Baltimore City children. She is also the Program Director for The Bridges Program, which provides after school string instruction to youth across Baltimore City. She earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School where she studied with renowned bass pedagogue Homer Mensch.
