Mr. Tom Goldstein

As a freelance percussionist in New York City for over twenty years, Mr. Goldstein performed extensively with groups such as the Orchestra of St. Lukes and the Brooklyn Philharmonic, as well as in many chamber groups, Broadway shows, and nightclubs. Especially active in contemporary music, he has premiered over one hundred solo and chamber works, many of which were written expressly for him. From 1980 to 1990 he was a founding member of the new-music group GAGEEGO. Mr. Goldstein has performed with Steve Reich and Musicians, Pauline Oliveros, American Festival of Microtonal Music, Continuum, and the Gregg Smith Singers. He currently performs and records with the Hoffmann/Goldstein Duo, the new-music ensemble Ruckus, and the percussion quartet Umbilicus. He has been a member of klezmer bands Klezzazz, Verklempt, and the Lost Tribe. He has composed several percussion works and theater pieces, a violin solo, and numerous songs. He has published articles in Perspectives of New Music and Percussive Notes and for Mellen Press, and has composed liner notes for Summit Records jazz recordings. Mr. Goldstein has recorded on Neuma, Vanguard, Polydor, Opus 1, O.O. Discs, CD Tech, Capstone, Innova, Centaur, I Resound Press, and CRI labels. He has received a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artists Award. Mr. Goldstein is Associate Professor of Music at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
