The emerging orchestral canon made it difficult for late nineteenth-century composers to achieve lasting recognition. Hubert Parry faced the additional challenge of living in Britain. The quality of his music and the headwinds he faced in his compositional career suggest that the canon is not necessarily made up of the best music by the best composers.
