Swipe Access Request
- Please email McCoy Chance (chancem1@umbc.edu) with your professor copied if you need to loan out an instrument. This will be by appointment only and on a case by case basis
- Once the request has been made, McCoy will email you with further instructions and documentation
- Instruments will be available for students to pick up from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM by appointment only
- If you borrowed an instrument over the summer you will be required to fill out a new loan contract for the Fall 25 and Spring 26 Semesters
- Please make an appointment with McCoy to renew your contract and check your instrument into the office
- Even if you are renewing your contract, office staff still need to lay eyes on the instrument to check the condition

- You can choose any empty locker as long as it is you fill out the registration form below
- If you do not have a lock, please see McCoy Chance in PAHB 238 to borrow a lock.
- If your locker is not registered within two weeks of starting classes, your lock will be cut off.
- If you left a lock on a locker over the summer and the combination was not on file then it has most likely been removed
- Lockers are yours for the entire academic year with the expectation that your locker will be cleared by the end of the spring semester.
- Please choose an appropriate locker for the size and needs of your instruments. There is a shared cello locker in the second-floor instrument storage room (PAHB247) as well as a shared guitar locker.

Juries
All music majors registered for a letter grade for Applied Music (private instruction MUSC193, MUSC194, and MUSC390) are required to take a faculty jury examination at the end of each semester. The jury grade will be provided to the private instructors to be used in determining each student’s final grade for the semester.
Performance, Teaching and Learning, and Jazz Studies majors should note that the jury taken during the 4th semester of lessons determines their eligibility to continue in the major and take MUSC 390 – Advanced Private Lessons. Students giving a junior or senior recital are excused from juries in the semester of their recital.
Jury Requirements:
Music Teaching and Learning Majors
Music Teaching and Learning majors (all juries): two contrasting works representing different eras prepared by memory.
Music Composition and Music Technology majors
Music Composition and Music Technology majors (all juries): two contrasting works representing different eras, with at least one of the pieces performing from memory.
Piano (Classical)
Piano Performance Freshman/Sophomore: Prepare two of the items below per semester by memory. Complete all four requirements by the end of the school year as assigned by your instructor.
- Etude
- Polyphonic work: A prelude and fugue by J.S. Bach or two contrasting movements from French/English suite
- First movement of a Classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert
- A work from the Romantic era or the 20th century
Piano Performance Junior/Senior: prepare all of the following by memory as assigned by your instructor:
- Multi-movement polyphonic work
- Complete classical sonata
- A work from the Romantic era
- A 20th century work
Freshman/Sophomore:
- All two-octave major/minor scales and arpeggios performed on marimba or vibraphone.
- 40 Percussive Arts Society International Drum Rudiments performed on snare drum.
Junior/Senior:
- Technical skills assigned based on the instrumental specializations of each student.
All Years:
- Two solo works representing the student’s instrumental specializations each semester. (For example, a marimba solo and a snare drum etude, or a vibraphone etude and a multi-percussion solo, etc.)
